Welcome to the Alaska State Section, AWRA!
Water Resource Public-Issue Letters and Information
by AWRA-AK President 2/14/15
Greetings to AWRA Alaska Section members and Alaska water
Alaska Section of AWRA has had a busy and productive year,
with plenty more to come. Our joint conference, held in
Juneau last October in conjunction with the Alaska Chapter
of the American Fisheries Society and the Southeast Alaska
Fish Habitat Partnership, was a great success. We had over
400 attendees, and from the feedback I received, everyone
found it to be an exciting and productive meeting. So much
so that we hope to do it again soon.
We've had some big changes in Board leadership over the
past year. Many thanks to our former Board members Anna
Liljedahl, Brock Tabor, Ed Parvin and Katrina Bennett for
their contributions to the Alaska Section. We're pleased
to welcome our new President-Elect Ryan Toohey, as well
as new Northern Region Director Molly Tedesche, new Southeast
Region Director Dave D'Amore, new South Central Region Director
Robin Beebee, and new Board Secretary Joe Miller. Past-President
Terry Schwarz and Treasurer Nikki Neuman are continuing
on as Board members as well. We're getting the spring Brown
Bags underway for the spring, so be sure to check the website
for the schedule of presentations in all 3 regions. Starting
this spring, we will be making Brown Bag presentations available
via WebEx, and we'll be archiving the presentations on the
AWRA Alaska Section website.
I'd also like to tell you about a couple of upcoming AWRA
events. The first is a series of workshops the Alaska Section
is putting on this May in Fairbanks, focusing on the use
of remote sensing technology in aquatic and hydrological
research and management. More information will be forthcoming
soon; meanwhile if you have questions about the workshops,
please contact me or workshop organizer Ryan Toohey directly.
Secondly, we're excited to announce that the 2016 national
AWRA Spring Specialty Conference will be held in Anchorage
from April 25th-27th; the Alaska Section is cosponsoring
and co-organizing the conference. The theme is Energy, Water
and Environment. It should be an exciting meeting; look
for more information as the year goes on!
Finally, the AWRA Board has several initiatives underway
and we're looking for volunteers to help make them happen.
We're looking to get more involved in K-12 education, including
science fairs. We're also interested in making a better
effort at recruiting AWRA members and in improving our communications
and outreach. This will, we hope, involve the publication
of a newsletter at regular intervals. Finally, we are interested
in improving the website as a resource for water professionals
by archiving relevant publications, dissertations, and theses
from both Alaska Section members and other Alaska water
resource professionals. Anyone who's interested in helping
out with any of these efforts is encouraged to contact me,
or any other Board member!
