GranTree Inn, Bozeman, Montana
Field trip and 5K run on October 2nd
The 2013 annual conference of the Montana Section of the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) will be held at the GranTree Inn in Bozeman October 3 – 4, 2013. The activities will start with the optional (but highly recommended) field trip scheduled for 1:00 to 5:00 on October 2nd, the day before the conference. The field trip will visit Hyalite Reservoir, the intake for the Bozeman water system along Hyalite Creek, and the Bozeman drinking water treatment plant, returning to the venue at 5:00. Following the field trip, you will have an hour to prepare for the second annual Hydrophile 3-mile run/walk.
The plenary session convenes the morning of October 3rd, followed by our traditional concurrent sessions the afternoon of the 3rd and morning of the 4th. The poster session and social hours will be from 5 to 7 pm on Thursday. The last of the conference activities on Thursday evening will be the banquet with a presentation by Engineers Without Borders, and the annual photo contest. The conference will wrap up Friday around noon with announcements, student presentation and poster awards, and introduction of the incoming Montana Section AWRA Treasurer.
Montana AWRA Field Trip: Bozeman Water Supply
The 2013 field trip is scheduled for Wednesday, October 2. Participants should board the bus at 12:45; we will leave the GranTree at 1:00 pm sharp. The field trip will focus on key features of Bozeman’s water supply and their changes through the years. First, we will visit Hyalite Dam, where Kevin Smith (DNRC) will tell us about the dam’s interesting 65-year history. We will then stop briefly at the redesigned intake along Hyalite Creek to learn about enhancements to the structure. The third and final stop will be the brand new drinking water treatment plant in Sourdough Canyon; Rick Moroney, the Water Treatment Plant Superintendent, will provide a guided tour of the plant’s state-of-the-art features. We will wrap up the afternoon with a brief discussion of Bozeman’s future water supply. Alan English serves on the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) that is reviewing a variety of proposed alternatives to secure an adequate municipal water supply; Alan will provide a summary of those alternatives and the status of TAC planning. All told, the field trip will provide an informative look at how a city adapts to meet its water needs.

The last of the conference activities on Thursday evening will be the banquet, with a presentation by two MSU students in Engineers without Borders (EWB): Bronwyn Rolph and Yasmin Chaudhry. Bronwyn and Yasmin will discuss their EWB chapter’s collaboration with the Khwisero Community in Western Province, Kenya. They work with community boards to implement clean water and sanitation facilities within primary schools of the district.
After the EWB Presentation, we will honor the 2013 MT AWRA Water Legend. Then, our banquet will wrap up with the always-entertaining annual photo contest and slide show. Please send photos for the banquet photo contest to MT AWRA V.P. Katherine Chase (email@example.com) by September 9, 2013.
