Virtual Water and the Energy-Water Nexus

As our nation strives to develop a secure and sustainable energy supply, consideration of our water resources becomes critical. Different forms of energy have dramatically different impacts on water supplies. Nearly half of all water withdrawals in the U.S. are for the thermo-electric industry and some of our greatest growth in energy demand is in our most water-depleted regions. Conversely, energy is a primary cost component in the treatment and conveyance of water, and by developing a stable, cost-effective energy supply, we improve the longevity and effectiveness of this most vital resource.

This presentation will detail the connections between water and energy, how water is required for energy, and how energy is needed for water. The event will focus on the energy industry within the context of virtual water. Similar to our carbon footprint, virtual water describes our water footprint, or the quantity of water that individuals and organizations use, whether through direct consumption or through other goods and services.

Thursday, January 14, 2010, at China Garden Restaurant in Rosslyn. There will be a social starting at 5:30pm followed by the discussion at 6:30pm. Please see details on the event information sheet, or click here to register.
