Groundwork Anacostia River DC – Field Trip

Groundwater Anacostia River DC (GWARDC) installed the nation’s first Bandalong Litter Trap™ in Watts Branch to help meet Clean Water Act requirements. In 2011, this single trap prevented more than 5,500 pounds of trash from reaching the Anacostia River. Supported by DC’s five cent plastic bag fee, and working in conjunction with District Department of the Environment (DDOE) and the Anacostia Riverkeeper, GWARDC installed two more traps this year. The stationary litter collecting devices collect floating debris, but do not interfere with fish passage.

Focused on the communities that border the Anacostia River and the region of the Anacostia watershed, GWARDC utilizes environmental restoration goals as a vehicle for community development. GWARDC programs enable residents to improve, care for, and promote their local environment, to reclaim lands for conservation, recreation, and economic development, and to reconnect residents to their environmental assets, including the Anacostia River and its tributaries.

Participants will hear from Dennis Chestnut, GWARDC’s Executive Director, on the non-profit’s mission and impact in the watershed and the community. After lunch, we will walk to a local park to visit one of the Bandalong sites. Hip waders and gloves will be available for those that want a real hands-on experience.

Saturday, May 12, 2012, at The Center for Green Urbanism, 3938 Benning Rd NE, Washington, DC (Metro: Minnesota Ave). Registration will begin at 10:30am, with the Annual Section Business Meeting at 10:45am, followed by a one-hour program, then a lunch and a walking tour of the Bandalong Litter Trap. Please see details on the event information sheet, or click here to register.
